Network marketers must use goal setting as one of their tools for success.
Often when we see someone is successful we say “He is a natural.” What we didn’t see was how many years of practice they have to put into it before they became a success.
Goal setting can help you to get to where you want to be. Setting goals can help to align your efforts, communicate objectives and help your team achieve more.
1. Set Goals That Motivate You
Make sure your goals are important to you and there is value in achieving them. Otherwise, you are less likely to achieve them.
If you really are not that committed to the goal, or if it is irrelevant to the larger picture, then the chances of you doing the work to make it happen are slim to none. Motivation is the secret to success.
Prioritize your goals. Focus on the important stuff in your life. Without focus you will end up with far too many goals, leaving too little time to devote to each one.
Achieving goals requires commitment. To maximize the likelihood of success, you must feel a sense of urgency and have a “I must do this” attitude.
When you don’t have this feeling you risk putting off the things you must do to make your goals a reality. This will leave you feeling disappointed and frustrated with yourself which is negative and discouraging.
You easily begin a self destruct feeling of “I can’t accomplish anything or be success at anything I do” mindset.
Write down WHY your goal is important to you. Ask yourself, “If I share this with my team, what would I tell them to convince them it was a worthwhile goal?” When you review your goals you can use this motivating statement to help you if you start to doubt yourself or lose confidence that you can actually make the goal happen.
2. Set Smart Goals
You may have read about SMART GOALS already. It often pops up in internet searches. But do you apply this rule?
If you want your goals to be powerful and reachable, they should be SMART.
- Time Bound
Set Specific Goals
Your goal must be very clear and well defined. Vague or general goals don’t provide sufficient direction and are ineffective.
Your goals are showing you the way. Make it as easy as you can to get to where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up.
Set Measurable Goals
Include information such as amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your progress. If your goal is “To get more reps” how will you know when you are successful?
If in one years time you have 1 additional rep are you successful?
Without a way to measure your progress to achieve your goals you miss out on the celebration that comes with knowing that you have actually achieved something.
The method that I like to use when setting goals to is envision the outcome. Where I want to be and when. I start with the end goal first. Writing down first what that will be. Second I begin by listing the steps I must take to reach that goal.
Set Attainable Goals
Make sure that you set reasonable goals that you can achieve. If you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only become demoralized and erode your confidence.
However, don’t set goals that are too easy. When you accomplish a goal that you didn’t have to work hard for it’s anticlimactic at best. It can make you fear setting future goals that you may not be able to achieve.
By setting realistic goals that challenge you to get out of your comfort zone, you achieve the balance that you need. These types of goals “raise the bar” bringing greater personal satisfaction.
Set Relevant Goals
The goals that you set should be relevant to the direction you want your life and your network marketing business to take.
By setting goals that are aligned with this you are developing the focus you need to get ahead and accomplish what you want to do.
If you set widely scattered and inconsistent goals you’ll squander your time and your life’s dreams away.
Set time bound Goals
Your goals must have a definite deadline. This is how you will measure and celebrate your success.
When you are working against a deadline, your sense of urgency increases. Your sense of achievement will come much sooner.
3. Set Goals in Writing
Just thinking you have a goal in your mind just doesn’t cut it! The physical act of writing down a goal is what makes it a real and tangible thing. You remove the excuse to forget about it.
Use the word “WILL” instead of statements such as “would like to” or “I want to.” For example “I will increase my sales by 10% this year,” not “I would like to increase my sales by 10% this year.” The statement “I will” is powerful and you can see yourself increasing your sales.
Post your goals in visible places to remind yourself everyday of what you intend to do. Put them on your bathroom mirror, walls, desk, computer monitor wallpaper, and refrigerator as a constant reminders.
4. Make an Action Plan
Having an action plan is often missed in the process of goal setting. You are only focused on the outcome and you forget to plan all the steps that you must take to reach your goal.
By writing out the individual steps, then crossing each one off as you reach it, you’ll realize that you are making progress toward your ultimate goal.
5. Stick With It!
Goal setting is an ongoing activity. It’s not just a means to an end. Build reminders into your routine to keep yourself on track. Make time slots in your planner calander to review your goals.
Remember that the action plan you set for yourself may change significantly over the course of a year, but the end destination will remain the same.
For example one of my goals is to have an additional 15,000 Twitter followers on my Twitter page in 2018. The steps I need to take to accomplish this are:
- Follow 1,000 new people daily using Manage Flitter.
- Un-follow daily those people who are not following me 5 days after I follow them using Manage Flitter.
- Create 4 pieces of new content for my Twitter feed on Tuesday and Friday. Add one per day scheduling them using Socialoomph.
- Have 1,250 new followers monthly. (15,000 ÷ 12 months).
- Accomplish by December 31, 2018.
- January 31 16.4 K followers
- February 28 17.7 K followers
- March 31 18.9 K followers
- April 30 20.2 Kfollowers
- Mary 31 21.4 K followers
- June 30 22.7 K followers
- July 31 23.9 K followers
- August 31 25.2 K
- September 30 26.4 K followers
- October 31 27.7 K followers
- November 30 28.9 K followers
- December 31 30.2 K followers
If I keep following new people, un-following and adding fresh content consistently I will reach my goal by the end of the year.
Now lets go forth and plan our strategy for the coming year to grow each of our network marketing business to new levels of prosperity.
